Field note 06 / The lookout /

One lookout, quite a lot of cliff.

The lookout was the easy bit. Making it belong to the coast turned into the real job.

This was meant to be a little stop with a good view.

I pictured Rusty getting out of Bonita and looking across the water. The first Blender lookout did that, but the rock beneath it looked like I'd parked the building on a cake stand. It needed to grow out of the headland.

Once I started fixing the rock, one cliff wasn't enough. A whole coastline made from copies of the same shape would be obvious from space, so I began a small family of related pieces.

Eight rocks are better than one

There are eight studies in this set. They share a look, but I gave them different ledges and silhouettes so I can turn a corner, step down toward a beach and hide joins when I repeat them.

I checked their size against a person and a vehicle. Rusty might eventually climb through parts of this coast, which is a good reason not to build every ledge at the height of a small office block.

Still a study

These pictures show Blender work from this stage of the project. The pieces still needed fitting into the island, and Rusty hadn't tried the lookout route in the game.

It's more rock than I expected to make for one scenic stop. At least the stop finally has somewhere to stand.
