Field note 01 / The testing ground /

Rusty finds his feet. Mostly.

A walk, a jog, a run. Then a ledge, a wall and a very questionable way across a gap. Rusty has a new playground.

A 37-second scripted walkthrough rendered in Godot using the real traversal course. Placeholder character and test scenery; the review camera differs from the playable third-person camera.

Dear diary, turns out Rusty needs legs as well as wheels.

This is a driving game, but getting out of the vehicle ought to be fun too. A useful shortcut might mean a climb, an awkward ledge, or a spectacularly bad idea involving a rope.

So this stop on the trip is a traversal playground: somewhere to make those movements work before asking them to carry a real island route.

The scenic route, on foot.

  • Walk, jog and run. More starts, stops, turns, direction changes and jumping.
  • Up and over. Vaults, ledge catches, sideways shimmies and climbing out of a hang.
  • Mind your head. Crouching, crawling and a running slide, including getting back up when the ceiling is low.
  • Questionable crossings. Wall and rock climbing, ropes, bars, poles and grapple anchors.

A fairly direct route to the top.

What could possibly go wrong?

Still a few bumps in the road.

This is a playable foundation. Movement feel, animation transitions and presentation still need polish. The rope and grapple poses currently adapt bar animations; dedicated poses would make those actions look better.

The climbing surfaces and attachment points are set up in the level. This test course shows the current actions working—it is still a long trip from a test course to a whole island.
