Field note 04 / The machinery bay /

Rusty discovers workplace safety.

I built a parcel press. Rusty found out why standing on the conveyor is a bad plan.

Godot gameplay prototype. Rusty takes the machinery for a short test drive.

I have built a machine that squashes Rusty. Sorry, Rusty.

It began as a simple interaction test: press a switch, start a conveyor and give the player a very obvious reason to move. The industrial press took care of that last part.

The sequence now runs in Godot. Rusty can start the machine, ride the belt, miss his chance to escape, get flattened and return at the checkpoint. I spent an unreasonable amount of time adjusting the moment of impact. It was worth it.

The whole unfortunate loop

This is more than a clip of a funny animation. The switch, belt, press, hit and respawn all happen as one playable loop. That's the useful part hidden under the goo.

Rusty returns at the checkpoint, with no sign of learning his lesson.

Still a prototype

The backpack, scenery and green mess are still prototype work. I wanted to know if the machine made sense to use and whether the failure got a laugh. I think it does.

I should probably give Rusty a safer delivery next. Probably.
